How To Accurately Assess Your Students’ English Level in Under 1 Hour

English Placement Test

When I first started teaching English, I assumed that all my students will know really well all about their level of English beforehand. I did not have to lift a single finger in this direction. Giving them an English Placement Test was something I didn’t even think about. Boy, I was soooo wrong!

Not only did they not know their level, but I found it so difficult to figure out where they were and what was wrong with their lack of engagement during classes. I missed all the signs and just went on doing business as usual. Until one day when I realized that I could do better if only I knew what my students really are in terms of their English language proficiency. So I started searching for an English placement test pdf or online that would give me the most accurate results.

You may be in my shoes as well, so let me tell you what you are missing out and how you can improve things in under one single hour. I’ll share with you how I use a fast English language assessment test pdf or online and how it was a game changer for my students.

1. You do not really know your students until placement test!

You may know their names or their hair color, but this is totally irrelevant when it comes to fulfilling their academic needs. What you have to find out where they are when it comes to their English level so you can create a strategy. Otherwise, you will walk blindly the entire year and never get to understand what’s going on with your class.

2. You can not create a personalized plan without English placement test!

In order to see real improvements in their English level, students need to have their own personalized plan. What goes OK for John will never work the same for Mary. This is why most students are never able to progress and to enjoy their English learning journey. The only way to do that is through placement testing.

3. You will grow highly frustrated!

Do you know that feeling that whatever you do your students seem to plateau forever? This thing happens because you do not offer them resources that are tailored for their level. You either go too high or too low. And this is normal because if you do not know their real level, you can not offer them what they really need. Finding out their level is your starting point.

4. Your students will never improve without placement testing!

By not using an English proficiency test created for your students, you are denying them the chance to improve. They never know where they are and never know where they are going to be by the end of the year. There is no strategy and no clear goals. Without these things, students never get better and it is possible to even fall behind.

5. You will feel like quitting!

Have you ever felt that teaching is too much? It is probably because you do not have a plan for your students. Not knowing where you are and where you are heading can be extremely damaging for your mental mojo. If you test your students’ English level, you will get the A-point, the starting point. After that you can travel to B-point with ease. Together with your students you start creating a plan to get them from A to B. And people with a plan are determined and know what they want to do. For them quitting is never an option. So take one class and test their English level.

Placement tests solves these problems!

I often use a FULL English placement test with answers that gives me 6 possible levels of placement. The test is about 40 minutes long and can be assessed really quickly. At the end, I give my students a report card that will state their current level of English. We also write on the report card their future English goals in terms of progress and draft together a plan for improvement.

This is so empowering for both of us that I repeat the test at the end of the school year. There is no surprise to see that almost all students improve at least one level because we know what we are doing and we have a plan to be successful.

I’ve shared the English placement test with a few teacher friends who have tried this strategy in their class and this is what they said.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Disha from Digital School has tried the English Language Placement Test in her class and said, “This is such a wonderful resource for English assessment. This is extremely helpful to make sure that the student is on the right path.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nima E. has tried the English Language Placement Test in her class and confessed, “It was great tool to use at the beginning of the year to gauge the level of the students. I like how it progressively gets harder as the test continues.”

Just imagine how you will feel when you start to get the benefits and results from the English language assessment test right in your class! Why don’t you give it a try?
